To Find the Perfect Bra, You Need Expert Support

Be honest. How old is the bra you are wearing right now? Did you buy it off the rack? Did you get fitted for it? How did you know what size to choose?

Having the proper bra can do more than improve your look, it can also improve posture and decrease back pain. Unfortunately, most women either never think to get properly fitted, or avoid it like a root canal.

Bra fitting is not only essential, it’s also easier than you think.

Here are some simple tips on getting the right bra fit.

  • Find your local large department store – or a specialty undergarment store.

  • Call ahead and ask to speak to the “intimates” department manager—tell her you want to make an appointment with the most experienced bra fitter on staff.

  • Bring a few different shirts to your appointment – tank, t-shirt and blouse.

  • Get ready to get personal with your associate – don’t worry, yours are not the first she has seen – being shy only delays the process.

  • She should measure you under your armpits and across your chest.

  • Discuss your preferences – underwire, bralette, multi-straps, padding, etc.

  • Based on her inventory and recommendations, she may bring you several different styles – try them all on. Let her adjust the straps.

  • Here’s the fun part: Put a shirt on. Bend over and tie your shoes. Raise your hands over your head. Do a little dance. Jump up and down. It sounds ridiculous, but trust me, doing these everyday things is the best way to see if you have the right fit.

  • If you find yourself having to readjust after any of those moves, skip to the next bra.

  • You may have to try on quite a few. You could be there an hour or more. You’ll know when you find the winner. Purchase at least 3 colors – black, white and nude.

  • Now that you know your size and brand, replace your bras about every 6-8 months. You don’t need another refitting (unless you have lost/gained weight), so you can even order online.

Now that you know what to do, here are few don’ts:

  • Don’t guess your size.

  • Don’t just walk in and expect to get the most out of your experience – it’s like walking into a salon and expecting the best hairdresser – book an appointment!

  • Don’t go to a store that only sells one brand of bra (i.e., Soma, Victoria Secret).

  • Don’t get frustrated– this is a process. It’s a time investment, not a quick in-and-out-on-my-lunch-hour event.

One potential source of frustration: many bra manufactures come out with a “newer” version of what they had previously, meaning your “favorite bra” is no longer available. Before getting upset, check online. I’ve ordered my “favorite bra” online for years because it was discontinued. In fact, I just ordered 3 new ones. The name and size should be on the inside panel or on the tag. Google. Cart. Checkout. Or you can always go back to your same awesome sales associate and see if she recommends something similar.

Now that you know some basic do’s and don’ts, go out there and get the best bra for your figure, needs and budget.
