How to Return a Gift You Don't Want
Chances are, you got some holiday gifts that were definitely not on your list. And, even though it’s the thought that counts, sometimes you want to exchange that thought for something you actually want.
So, even with no tag, no receipt, and when you don’t want the gift-giver to you to know you’re returning it, here’s how to get the most in return for your unwanted item.
1 - Make it look good.
Fold any garments neatly. Make sure there aren’t any Christmas tree needles stuck to them. Put them back in a store box or bag, if possible. If you have shoes, put them back in the box and buff out any scuffs or blemishes.
2 - Go where everybody knows your name.
Check the return policy at your favorite department store. That way you know what to expect when you get there. Then head directly to that store to see your favorite salesperson. They’ll be more willing to help you because you are a repeat customer and they should want to keep you! Don’t have a favorite salesperson? Use any frequent shopper program clout you might have at the Customer Service desk.
3 - Be nice.
Gather up all your patience and put on your kindest smile to make the customer service rep want to help you. Acknowledge that the holidays are crazy and applaud them for making it through. (Retail in December is maniacal, and sales associates deserve a little sympathy.) Your kindness may motivate them to dig a little deeper to find a way to help you.
4 - Consider all options.
Since you probably don’t have a receipt, be open to swapping out for another size or similar item. If the item has gone on sale since the holidays, be prepared to only get the value of what the item is being sold for today.
5 - Take credit.
Getting store credit is a win. In fact, I absolutely love store credit. I can use it any time, for myself or when I need to buy a gift for someone else.
So, don’t get discouraged if you didn’t get exactly what you wanted for the holidays. You can still exchange it for something you like. And, if you strike out at the return counter, you can always regift it next year!
