How to Look Your Best on a Video Call
Being quarantined has forced many of us to use videoconferencing services more than ever—and I’ve heard from quite a few people that they don’t like what they see! The good news is, there are a few really simple things you can do to enhance the way you appear on a screen. Follow these tips to seamlessly transition your in-person look to your on-camera style (and remember—you usually only have to look fabulous from the waist up!):
Stick to jewel tones
Regardless of your skin tone, you can trust a jewel tone—a highly saturated color that resembles a gemstone—to enhance your complexion. Ruby red will make your cheeks appear brighter, while amethyst purple will give your facial features more dimension. Wearing emerald green will enhance your eyes.
No patterns
Busy patterns can make people pay attention to you for all the wrong reasons. They can also clash with whatever is behind you in the background. In fact, do what you can to make sure your backdrop is free of any loud or bold patterns. Speaking of the backdrop…
Style your shot
In addition to checking to be sure the background is clean and simple, make sure your light source is behind your camera, lighting your face—not behind you so you look like a silhouette. Also, try to set your camera at eye level so the audience is looking directly at you, not up. You can do this by opening your laptop at a 90-degree angle and stacking it on something like a pile of books.
Wear lipstick
Whether it’s a gloss or a long-lasting stain, lipstick will make any face appear more polished. It doesn’t have to be a huge pop of color—just something that defines your lips naturally and makes people take notice when you’re speaking.
Sit up straight
OK, so it isn’t necessarily a style tip, but when I’m on video calls, I do notice the difference between those with proper posture and the slouchers. Look aware and be present!
Look great from the waist up
We don’t know how long videoconferences will be replacing in-person interactions, but while we transition to this “new norm,” let’s make sure that we keep our pajamas in the drawer until it’s time for bed. Take a few cues from how your favorite news personalities are dressing and start looking great from the waist up!
