Empowering Young Women to Find Their Style

I recently visited with my niece, who just graduated from Arizona State University. Like many recent grads, she’s busy updating her LinkedIn profile and applying for jobs. We talked about her career plans—where she wants to live and work—and I asked how I could help. Her answer was straightforward:

“I have no idea what to wear now. My college clothes are beat up. Can you tell me what people wear to an office job?”

I came back with a few questions of my own:

1 - What kind of job do you want?

Let’s determine your style baseline. If you’re working as a graphic designer, your wardrobe will be much different than if you’re looking for a job in finance. It’s a cliché, but it’s true: dress for the job that you want, not the one you have. If you look the part—and you’re as put-together as possible—you’ll have a better chance of landing that second interview and, eventually, that first promotion.

2 - What is your monthly clothes budget?

Just like you should budget for any other bills, it’s smart to set money aside for adding “inventory” to your closet on a monthly or quarterly basis. Once your style baseline is determined, you can figure out which style staples you have and which ones you need. Remember, versatility is key here—look for pieces that are suitable for the office/school and for a night out with friends. Then, find your favorite stores (amazing deals can be found at Nordstrom Rack and outlet stores) and start shopping.

3 - What message do you want your style to send?

You don’t have to be J. Lo or Beyoncé to have a “personal brand.” Find your look and own it. Once your style is defined, and you’ve got a clothing budget, start a Pinterest board of clothes and outfits that resonate with who you are and what you want to be. As you start to come into your own as a young adult and professional, you’ll begin to develop a strong idea of the clothes you need to establish and evolve your style.

Finding Your Style

Now, this obviously doesn’t only apply to my amazing niece.

There are so many young women every day who transition from school to work, or from job to job, or just need an updated look for whatever reason. I’ve worked with quite a few mothers to help their daughters find some fashionable (and appropriate) outfits to help them discover a style that’s their own (and not their mom’s). It’s a tricky balancing act.

When a young woman shops with me, I first try to help her ignore the noise of Instagram influencers and peer pressure. My goal is to help her let go and really explore looks that feel genuinely comfortable and stylish to her. When she approaches the experience with an open mind, together, we will come away with a look that is personal and empowering.

These experiences are always so rewarding for me. So, to help young women like my niece (and their moms), I’m currently offering a 25% discount to any young woman—from ninth grade to recent college grad—who books a shopping session with me between today and September 1, 2019.

This makes a great gift for a daughter, niece or friend. Book a session with me today—we’ll have a great time!
