10 Essential Pieces to Look Like an Exec on an Entry-Level Budget
I’ll never forget my first “real” job. I was covering for an administrative assistant who was away on maternity leave. I landed the gig by nailing the interview in my best, most professional outfit. Unfortunately, it was my only professional outfit.
The company was very buttoned-up and I was an assistant to one of the managing partners. My old college wardrobe wasn’t going to cut it. This was going to be a challenge—especially on an entry-level budget.
I limited myself to 10 key pieces and a $200 budget. I made some smart, simple and comfortable shopping choices, and then started to upgrade each as I earned more money.
Now, given this was over *cough* 25 *cough* years ago, so for the purposes of this blog post, I would need a slightly higher budget. Let’s say $350. Strategic shopping, sales and coupons will bring this number even lower.
1 - Black blazer
Wear it over any top to instantly look more professional. Keep it at your cubicle, office or in the car, so you always have it on-hand. A lightweight ¾ sleeve allows for year-round wear. Here’s an example of one that I love from Nordstrom Rack.
Cost: $38.98
2 - Black pumps
Even if you’ve never worn heels and you walk like a baby giraffe in them, get a kitten heel that gives you a little height with a little more stability. As you become more confident walking in heels, you’ll see that going up to a 3” heel won’t feel as uncomfortable. Here’s an example in patent leather from Nordstrom Rack. Patent leather is nice because it’s easy to clean with a simple wipe and this LifeStride brand is comfortable enough for long days on your feet.
Cost: $39.97
3 - White button-down shirt
It sounds boring, but white button-down shirts can have some fun embellishments on them such as notched collars, piping or French cuffs. Look for those small touches that give your look a little more personality. Here’s an example from Banana Republic Outlet.
Cost: $27.98
4 - Cap sleeve shirts
Cap sleeves cover your shoulders and help keep odor away from the lining of your blazer. If you find a camisole that fits nicely and is offered in other colors, purchase 2 solid and 2 patterned since many retailers offer BOGO offers and discounts. Here’s an example of a patterned option from Nordstrom Rack.
Cost: $17.38
5 - Black pants
A straight-cut pant can be paired with just about anything, elongates the body and is slimming. Add a kitten heel to look and feel taller. Pair with a white shirt or camisole. Make sure the pants are at a height that allows you to wear heels or flats without being too long. Here’s an example of black trousers from The Loft. I love these pants because they’re available in modern and curvy fit.
Cost: $39.50
6 - Flats/Mules
For those days when your feet need a break. Add some personality with fun colors, patterns or two-toned. Personally, I like a mule over a flat, simply because I can just slide it on/off. Here’s an example that I like from DSW. Note that DSW often offers online coupons, texts and free VIP Membership, so the cost here can definitely be lower.
Cost: $44.98
7 - Patterned pencil skirt
Pencil skirts go with flats and heels, and can be dressed up or down. Pair a pencil skirt with a white blouse and heels, or a camisole and flats. Here’s an example of a pinstriped pencil skirt that is perfect for the office from The Loft. I love that little ruffle on the bottom for an extra touch of femininity.
Cost: $32.49
8 - A good fitting dress
Whether it’s an A-line, wrap or body con, any type of dress that looks great with or without a black blazer is a must-have. Play with some colors here as long as there is black in the pattern to match the jacket and black heels. Stay away from any dresses that have flared shoulders, as bunching in the armholes will happen when you add the blazer. Make sure your dress stops at the knees. I love this one from Nordstrom Rack.
Cost: $29.97
9 - V-neck ruched top
Ruching is a sewing technique that gathers material evenly across the waistline to create a ruffle or pleat. These tops are easy to wash, go with everything, are relatively inexpensive and come in a variety of colors. Not to mention, they’re extremely flattering. Choose colors that pair with your mules. I love this top from Nordstrom Rack
Cost: $14.97
10 - New bras/underwear
As we get older, our bodies change. So you’ll need to pay a little extra attention (and a few more dollars) to keep your shape and feel comfortable. I recommend going to a large department store and getting fitted by a bra specialist in the lingerie department (it’s usually free). Invest in one or two new bras (black and nude) and 5-6 new pairs of underwear. Look for underwear that is seamless so there are no panty lines.
Cost: Budget for 2 bras @ $25 each and $15 for 5 pairs of underwear. You will spend about $65 for new undergarments. I do not recommend buying bras and underwear online.
Total budget for all these items in 2019: $351.22 – without coupons or discounts.
