What to Wear When You Hate Wearing Shorts
There are so many things to love about summer. But there are definitely a few things to hate. Mosquitos, sunburns and sweating come to mind. And, for me, wearing shorts is right up there. Now, let me be clear: I don’t hate when other people wear shorts. Some people look amazing in shorts. But my legs are on the stockier side and I have never found a pair of classic shorts that are flattering or comfortable.
And I know I’m not alone. I’ve spoken to many women who feel the same. So, how can we stay cool in the summertime and still look cool? Here are some options that have served me well:
1 - Maxi-Dresses
Maxi-dresses are casual and comfy, but also super versatile. When shopping for maxi-dresses, make sure you can wear a comfortable bra and look for a top that is ruched or has a design to either enhance or downplay your bust (depending on whether you want your bust to be enhanced or downplayed). Maxi-dresses often come in bold, bright patterns that make them suitable to wear in almost any situation. Pair them with flip-flops to the pool, or, add a denim jacket, some wedges, bangles and big sunglasses and you’re ready for a dinner date.

2 - Lightweight Wrap Dresses
Typically shorter than maxi-dresses, wrap dresses look great on any figure because the “wrap” creates and enhances a flattering waistline. They can range from mini to tea to hi-low lengths, and come in many colors and patterns. If you’re on the taller side, look for knee-length. If you have a larger bust, look for ruffles on the neckline. Like maxi-dresses, wrap dresses are also versatile enough to wear in both professional and casual settings.

3 - Rompers
Rompers (or jumpsuits) used to be reserved for kids, but the grown-up version is a trend that has been round for a while now. They are completely work-appropriate and, by adding a jacket, you have yourself a power suit. Rompers with a wrap tie (or even pockets!) create a slim waistline. They come in a huge variety of lengths and fabrics. Look for solid colors or vertical stripes with a horizontal tie closure. If the length is too long, remember, that’s an easy alteration fix at your local dry cleaner – it’s not a deal breaker!

4 - Scarf Skirts
The asymmetry of the handkerchief scarf skirt creates a feminine, petite look, but also has the versatility and comfort to carry you through many summer seasons. Pair it with a plain white tank top for a super-casual look, or add a belt, cork block heels, a flowy blouse and chunky jewelry, and head out for a night with the girls. Scarf skirts come in a variety of fabrics ranging from super lightweight chiffon to eyelet patterns.

5 - Cropped Wide-Leg Linen Pants
I have to admit, linen is not my favorite textile—it needs dry cleaning and/or a lot of ironing. However, the combination of linen along with other fabrics, like rayon, creates a piece that doesn’t require as much attention, and is still lightweight enough to keep you cool over the summer. Some linen blends are machine washable, while remaining durable. Look for high-waisted drawstring pants in light, summer colors. A cropped length (28” inseam or less) is flattering regardless of your height.
I absolutely love these drawstring linen blend pants that Nordstrom is selling.
Anything But Shorts
Make sure your “anything-but-shorts” summertime choices meet the following criteria:
It should be easy to wash and care for.
It should be versatile enough to create multiple looks.
You should be able to sit down comfortably.
No visible panty lines.
If it’s a dress, make sure you can’t see your bra straps, or your boobs when you bend forward.
And, of course, it has to be flattering.
