Using Color to Make a Statement
You know the old saying, a color speaks a thousand words? Okay fine, that’s not exactly the saying… but in your outfit, a color can speak volumes in just a fraction of a second! Are you trying to say that you’re bold? Free-spirited? Calm? Ambitious? Maybe you want to communicate that you’re driven and serious, or perhaps more on the playful side. You may not realize that every time you reach into your closet, you could be making a decision that will affect the way others perceive you for the rest of the day.
So, what are you trying to say to the world? Read on to find out what your go-to hue should be depending on where you’re going and what you’re trying to communicate.
Disclaimer: Keep in mind that our skin tones, hair colors, eye colors, etc. are all unique, so certain colors will be more complementary than others. Shameless plug: schedule a color analysis with a personal stylist like me to get to know which colors work best for you.
Red says you’re confident and daring
Red is the color of passion and boldness, and will guarantee you a share of the spotlight wherever you go. Donning a vibrant red communicates that you’re outspoken and full of life. Sometimes you may even enjoy living life on the wild side. Red will make you feel sexy and empowered while telling those around you that you like to live life to the fullest and aren’t afraid to have a little fun!
Red is bold and exactly what to wear when you want to make a statement. Whether you’re addressing a large crowd as a keynote speaker, or having an intimate conversation on date night, red is your go-to color when you want all eyes on you.
Yellow is a great complementary color
Yellow represents joy! Wearing yellow will quickly communicate a happy and positive disposition to those around you, all while adding a fun pop of color to your #OOTD.
Pro tip: when it comes to sporting this sunny tone, play around with different shades. A lighter yellow, for instance, may evoke a warm and soft attitude, while a brighter yellow can symbolize a personality that’s more creative and free-spirited.
I recommend yellow to add a splash of visual interest to my clients’ outfits. Often, a great way to accessorize an outfit is with a bright yellow shoe. To me, yellow is a nice ray of sunshine, but too much sun can be bad for you, so I tend to stick with just a hint of this happy hue.
Blue is reliable and calm
Donning a bold blue can help you feel confident and at peace, while also inspiring a sense of tranquility in those around you. Similar to yellow, blue is a great color to experiment with when it comes to mixing up different shades and tones. A bright blue might convey a sense of energy and vibrance, whereas a soft blue can express a calmer and more patient demeanor. But whichever shade you go with, make sure you’re having fun with it—wearing blue does not mean feeling blue!
Since blue represents serenity and calmness, it’s often a good choice to wear when you want to keep a client or an entire audience at ease, or when you want to stand out as a symbol of patience and composure at more hectic events like busy conferences or larger dinner functions.
Green shows that you’re fully present or ready to start something new
The color green is rooted in feelings of luck, nature, and abundance. Wearing this earthy tone can make you feel grounded and renewed. Green symbolizes new beginnings, making it a great option for when you’re starting a new chapter or embarking on a new project in life.
Sporting green can make you seem more approachable to those around you, so next time you’re networking or meeting new people, consider adding some green to your ensemble. Green is also a great choice for attending retreats, coaching classes, and other events where you want to send a message that you are fully present.
Tap into your royal side by adding some purple
Like red, wearing purple will help you stand out from the crowd. This color is associated with a strong and sophisticated presence, so it’s best for days when you have an important meeting or want to set yourself apart from the rest. Though purple can make those around you feel a sense of serenity, it’s also associated with mystery and intrigue, so make sure to rock your favorite purple pieces on days when you’re feeling a bit mysterious!
As a blend of red and blue, purple is another great color to wear when attending a meeting or event where you want to communicate that you’re powerful, confident, calm, and trustworthy. I find that purple can pave the way for open and honest business conversations.
